Biog

An attack-minded midfielder with a keen eye for goal, Charlie came through the Boys Club system to become a peripheral member of Willie McStay's new Youth team setup through 94/95 and 95/96. He had been handed schoolboy forms while attending Cardinal Newman's school as early as 1993. During the ensuing period Celtic's underage teamsheets often contained the somewhat topical names Adams and McGuinness, although ultimately John and Charlie were to prove less successful in their football careers than Messrs. Gerry and Martin were in bringing British imperialism in Ireland to heel.

With the award of a professional contract in summer 1996 came greater consistency, and Charlie made more regular appearances through 1996/97 for both Youths and Reserves. This culminated in a goalscoring appearance in the Old Firm BP Youth Cup final on 14/5/97, the second year in succession that he had scored in the final of that particular competition.

Despite this, no new contract was forthcoming and McGuinness departed in summer 1997. With this he is thought to have retired from the game and his subsequent activities are unknown.
