Biog

Quick and sinewy left back from Eastercraigs BC and St. Ninian's school invited to trial ahead of 1987/88 then handed a p/t contract in November. He had showed up well in reserve games against Vale of Clyde and Dundee.

But McKeown was on a college course at Jordanhill and despite the attempts of McNeill, he would not commit to a full time contract. Unable to progress like his full-time colleagues he was released at the end of that season.

He was picked up by Airdrieonians then moved on to Albion Rovers a couple of years later, where he played under Tommy Gemmell for a spell. Meanwhile Des' decision to stay part-time was paying off and he now juggled his playing exploits with a career as a stationary salesman.

Became a regular at Rovers and moved to Queen of the South in 1994. Had four good years at 'the doonhamers' then moved to Partick Thistle, still part-time, in 1998. He was first pick for two seasons at Firhill, before reverting to Queen of the South in November 2000.

Joined Stenhousemuir in October 2001 then saw his playing career curtailed by a badly broken leg sustained in a 'friendly' with Barrow in July 2002. He stayed on behind the scenes at Stenny then took the managerial reigns in 2004. Quit two years later citing a "general malaise" at the club.

He and tabloid fool Bill Leckie had earlier released a rather smug and self-congratulatory autobiography. Has recently divided his time between increasing media work (BBC Scotland and the Scottish Sun) and running marathons for cancer charities.
