Celtic Career Review
A young striker who knew his way to goal, Charlie McLean emerged from the youth system having served his time with Giffnock North AAFC – Celtic's erstwhile nursery club. He hit seven goals in eight Youth and Reserve games in 1990/91 before rattling in more than thirty for Giffnock North in the first half of 1991/92.
Eager for first team football he moved on to Hamilton Academical in March 1993 and continued to regularly find the net when given an opportunity, hitting seven League goals from just nine starts the following season. However, for reasons which are unclear his opportunities at Hamilton soon dried up and he found himself released by 'Accies' in summer 1995.
Subsequently a one game stint at Arbroath preceded a move to Ronnie Glavin's English Northern League outfit Emley. But despite more goals McLean soon headed back across the border, treading the 'Junior' circuit for Cumnock, Arthurlie and Larkhall Thistle over the next few years.
A 'Senior' comeback materialised in 2001 when he signed for Albion Rovers and again hit the goal trail. Styling himself as "Chazz" McLean he also penned a regular column for Rovers' official website, wherein he held court on a number of issues and demonstrated unusual articulacy and an enduring affection for his first club Celtic. After publicly tiring of Albion Rovers via some tabloid outbursts he appears to have retired from the game – this after failing to settle during a brief spell with Highland-based minnows Elgin.
