Celtic Board – Present | Celtic Board | Celtic's Foundation | About Celtic

Michael McDonald and son, 2001Michael McDonald joined the football board on September 21st, 1994 along with John Keane and Willie Haughey and has been an independent non-executive director of Celtic Football and Athletic Company Ltd. (as opposed to the PLC) since that time. The Football and Athletic Company Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the PLC, its main task being the day-to-day management, running and promotion of the club. On his appointment he said that he wanted to use his skills in marketing and the retail trade to the benefit of promoting the Celtic product. He used to be one of the largest shareholders at the club after Dermot Desmond.

He is the stepson of Gerald Weisfeld and joined the What Everyone Wants retail chain in 1980 and in 1988 he was appointed to the What Everyone Wants group board as Public Relations Director. In 1991 he became business manager to the Weisfeld Partnership and fund manager to the Weisfeld Foundation, a registered charity.

Mr McDonald has spent and continues to spend a considerable amount of time focusing on supporter relations, building strong relationships with the various supporters groups and representing the Club at supporter functions.

In July 2000 he was involved in liaising between supporters groups and the club to find an equitable way to all parties so that Celtic Supporters felt they had access to the club and that players were able to focus on playing. He stated, "I have absolutely no intention of quitting the board but if people came in and decided that change was needed I would gladly step aside – I wouldn't need to be asked twice."

Michael McDonald is a committed Celtic fan as well as a member of the Football Club Board. On his appointment in 1994 he was by far the youngest member of the Board and he still continues to be the youngest member of both the PLC and Football Club Boards.
