Jackie Millsopp signed for Celtic in April 1947 on provisional terms from Blantyre Celtic as a 16 year-old.
Capable of playing in most positions Jackie - born and raised in Cambuslang - made his first team debut in a 2-1 Glasgow Cup home win over Queen’s Park on September 13.
But tragically the youngster’s Parkhead career would be all too short. Jackie was used mostly as cover but his versatility was an asset to the Bhoys and allowed him to step in for such diverse talents as Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans and Jock Weir. He had been a reliable stand in and by 1952 had began to establish himself in the first team picture.
However in September of that year Jackie had played in a 5-3 win over Falkirk but was taken ill with stomach pains. John sadly passed away a fortnight later on 17th September 1952 following complications from a burst appendix operation. He was just 22-years-old.
On the day of his funeral – September 20th – the Celtic First Team attended John's funeral along with a delegation from Rangers. That same afternoon Celtic played Rangers in a league clash at Celtic Park and the Celts honoured Jackie’s memory with a 2-1 victory at Parkhead in what was very likely an emotional atmosphere.
Jackie Millsopp played 26 times for the Bhoys and scored one goal.
