BiogA Greenock-born goalkeeper signed early in the centenary season from Johnstone Burgh juniors.
Murdoch was brought in as a reserve behind Bonner and McKnight, but ahead of youth keepers McGeown and Stevie Hutchison. He saw McKnight depart at the end of 1987/88, only to fall further behind with the signings of Rough and Andrews. He then joined Partick Thistle on loan on 4 February 1989, staying until the following November. Returning to find Bonner ever-present and Mark McLean also challenging, he immediately went back out for a month's loan at Hamilton Accies.
Murdoch went into 1990-91 as Bonner's recognised understudy. Taken on the pre-season tour to Germany/Holland, he played in the opening 2-2 draw against Kickers Emden and the second half of the 6-0 win over Ottersburg.
But with Bonner still ever-present the club accepted a bid from Partick in February 1991. The Maryhill outfit had been impressed by his performance on loan and Murdoch's £85,000 portion of the £150,000 double deal (with Paul McLaughlin) remains their record transfer.
At Thistle he competed with Craig Nelson for the gloves and made a decent number of appearances during the club's promotion season in 1991-92. In the Premier Division, Scotland 'B' cap Nelson edged ahead and Murdoch found himself back on the bench. He was brought back for the tail end of 1993-94 and played reasonably well in a 1-1 draw at Parkhead, despite selling the opening goal to Pat McGinlay with an ill-fated rush off his line.
That summer he stunned Partick by knocking back a new contract in order to join the Police. Announcing that he'd been "disappointed once too often" in his football career, he remained on the books until November 1994 - making two further appearances - despite a public slanging match with his furious manager John Lambie.
