Glasgow-born Gerry Sweeney started his profesional football career with Celtic but failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Bhoys.

The defender moved on to Morton before signing for Bristol City for £22,000 in June 1971. Also capable of playing in midfield, Gerry quickly established himself as a regular with the Robins and he would go on to make more than 300 appearances for the English club, even helping them into First Division.

Gerry would spend a decade with Bristol before moving to York City in 1981.
