Review

The Scotsman – Monday, 6th April 1891, page 5

St Mirren v Celtic – Great interest was taken in the meeting of the above teams at Westmarsh Paisley. The attendance of spectators was very large, a large number travelling from Glasgow to witness the game. Celtic lost the toss, and the home team opened the game with a strong wind in their favour. Colman was early conspicuous by a fine run down to the home goal, but A McBain intercepted, and Dunlop getting on the leather neatly scored. From the kick out, Dowds raised the enthusiasm of the spectators by a brilliant exhibition of dodging, but his final pass to Campbell was not taken advantage of. Time and again the Saints operated in front of the home goal, but the ball could not be forced through. Returning again to the attack, the game became very exciting, as the Celtic secured two corners in rapid succession. McGhee was entrusted with the kicks, and although he placed them nicely, McFarlane easily cleared. Play continued in the St Mirren ground until Dunlop raised the siege, but Reynolds tackled splendidly, and again the ball found its way to the vicinity of Cameron. Most strenuous efforts were here made to score, but Cameron saved splendidly, and half-time arrived without either registering. In the second-half, after some play in mid-field, the home team were the first to have a look in. The Celtic retaliated, and after a fruitless corner Morrison transferred the play to the other end, and, passing over to Easton, that player scored the first point. This point put new life into the game. The Irishmen improved, but they had to retire beaten by one goal to nothing.
