Review

(match report)

The weather was delightfully fine for spectators, but far too warm for football. Councillor Angus Campbell led the Renton on to the field, and the cheering which greeted them could be heard a long way off. It was hearty and spontaneous. Kelly led the Celtic.

Renton won the toss, and played with the wind. At the very start they had a burst away, and Abraham’s parting shot, which was wide, was loudly cheered. they continued the pressure, which was relieved by a smart run by Kelly. The Celts soon got into their usual combination but, when dangerously near Lindsay, Campbell kicked wide. In a minute more Kyle sent in a rattling good shot, which Lindsay caught and saved smartly. Playing with all the characteristic dash of former days, Renton forwards had a grand run, brushing aside all opposition, and when nearing goal McCall narrowly missed scoring. McBride was playing a stubborn game for Renton, and repeatedly barred Madden’s progress.
A beautiful run, inaugurated by McMahon and taken part in by all the Celtic forwards, resulted in Madden sending in a good shot, but the ball was blocked by McCall. Afterwards McBride conceded a corner, and, as the result of some good work on the part of the Celts’ forwards, Madden sent in a deadly shot; but Lindsay was all there, and saved brilliantly. Only exceptionally good defence prevented the Celtic scoring from a series of attacks.
Renton had very hard lines, McCall sending in a stinging shot which struck the post, and, rebounded into play. The ball struck the crossbar with a shot from Abraham and went over. Hannah at this stage had to leave the field owing to colliding with a player and receiving a cut on the head.
After 30 minutes’ play, the Celtic scored the first goal. McMahon accepted a pass from Dowds, and sent in a lightening-like shot, the ball going through before Lindsay could well realise it. From a spirited attack Renton nearly beat Bell. A corner was given, but it proved fruitless. The Celtic got away, and Dowds had only to kick the ball through, but in the excitement he bungled it. Just before the close of half-time Abraham equalised for the Renton with a shot that could not well have been saved, and the result was greeted with loud cheers. Considering the heat, the game was a fast one, and at half-time each side scored a goal.
The Celtic were the first to show up in the second half, and Dowds with an overhead kick made a good attempt to score, but the ball went over the bar, the Celts’ forwards were playing very cleverly, and after five minutes’ play McMahon headed the ball through, scoring the second goal for his team. kyle was proving himself a capable substitute for Maley, Kelly was in his usual form, McKeown was prominent with some tremendous returns, while Reynolds did some good head work. The Rentonians had the pluck of old, while McCall, Hannah, and Lindsay were as clever ever, and many good attempts by the Celtic forwards were frustrated through their efforts.
For a time the Renton forwards gave great trouble to the Celtic defence, but Kelly, Reynolds and McKeown proved equal to the occasion. A grand run by McMahon resulted in a corner, which came to nothing. The left wing play of McMahon and Campbell was greatly admired, the former being exceedingly dangerous when nearing goal, but he was well watched by Hannah.
The Renton forwards had some capital runs, but were unfortunate at goal. from a pass by Campbell, Dowds nearly scored, the ball rebounding from the crossbar into play. right up to the close the game was keenly contested, but there was no further scoring. Hannah, at back, showed great generalship, and repeatedly averted defeat.
the result was – Celtic, 2 goals; Renton, 1 goal.
