Match Report

From a Newspaper Report at the time

Played at Ibrox Park, Govan. The weather was very disagreeable, but notwithstanding this the attendance of spectators was large, nearly 6,000 being present.
Before going on the field the referee decided that no tie should be played, therefore the game was only a friendly.
Losing the toss the Third kicked off and made for bell, but McKeown cleared. Play was quickly transferred to the other end, where Dowds registered the first goal for the Celts.
From a try by Burke the Third nearly equalised immediately after. Bell, however, was all there, and the Celts were not long in getting down on Downie, who failed to stop one from McMahon, thus making the second goal for the “bhoys”.
Nettled at those reverses, the Third came away in grand style, and Burke notched their first goal. They played up with renewed energy to equalise the score, but their shooting was weak. Burns and Burke each ruined what seemed certain goals. Breaking away, the Celts obtained a corner, which proved fruitless. Play after this was confined to mid-field for some time. A free kick against the Celts brought the Third round Bell, but McKeown and Reynolds averted disaster.
A good run by Madden was the next feature of the game. He shot and Downie saved. The kick-out was caught up by McMahon, who scored the third goal for the Celts. The Celts nearly repeated their performance two minutes later, but Smith spoiled their chance.
Putting vigour into their play, the Third came away again, and Bell had to throw out twice to save his citadel.
Half-Time sounded shortly after, with the result – Celtic, 3 goals; Third Lanark, 1.
After the interval the game restarted by the Celts. Ere a minute had passed Campbell put on their fourth goal. The Third had a look in for a short time, but the defence of the Celts was too much for them, and play was again in their half of the field. A shot by Madden struck the post and rebounded into play, Dowds was lying handy, and by a swift shot he scored the fifth goal for the Celts.
Still the Third kept pegging away but luck was against them. Their team seemed disorganised, whilst the Celtic were playing to excellent form. The combination of the Celtic front division was as near perfection as possible; Madden, McMahon and Campbell were especially prominent. The latter, after cleverly manipulating the ball past several of the Third, scored the sixth goal for the Celts, the ball going through off Smith, who tried to save.
Two minutes later McGhee put on a seventh goal, and before the close McMahon added an eighth point.
This was all the scoring. The Third were unfortunate, but all round the Celts were their superiors. The best men on the field were – Downie Thomson and Burke for the Third, while all the Celtic played well, especially Kelly, Madden, McMahon and Campbell.
Final result – Celtic, 8 goals; Third Lanark, 1 goal.
