Celtic v Third Lanark – Considerable doubt existed all the week as to the probability of this Glasgow Cup semi-final tie being played, but it was thought that the thaw of the past couple of days would render it possible. At the last moment the referee declared the ground unfit for a cup tie, so a friendly match was played. It would be hard to discover why the referee had disallowed the tie, as the game throughout was played freely. Result :- Celtic, six goals; Third Lanark, nil.

Match Report

From a Newspaper report from the time.

These teams met at Parkhead to play off their tie in the semi-final for the Glasgow Cup. On inspection of the ground, however, Mr Scott, Dalmuir, declared it unplayable, and a friendly took place.

In less than a minute from the start, McMahon scored the first goal for the Celtic, after some pretty work by the entire front division.

The Third tried hard to get away, but they were fairly hemmed in, and McMahon was loudly cheered for a long shot which took Downie by surprise. All the same, he saved. Ten minutes later McMahon scored a second goal. A minute or two later Madden shot a third, and Towie a fourth. The Third seemed taken aback at this sudden work, and for the first time from the kick-off had a clear run into their opponents’ territory, when they nearly scored owing to a slip by Doyle. However, Cullen picked up the ball and cleared.

The play was very one-sided, all in favour of the Celtic, who were leading by 4 goals to 0 at half-time.
A minute after the restart Madden scored the fifth goal for the Celts after as clever a display by the forwards as anybody could wish.

Campbell added a sixth easily. The Third tried hard to make progress, but they were fairly outplayed. The Celtic gave a very fine exhibition all over, and nothing could have been better than their forward play, there being a perfect understanding among the men, and they almost worked the ball any way they liked.

A good run by Brodie looked as if the Third would score, but Cullen saved.

The game ended – Celtic, 6 goals, Third Lanark, 0 goals.
