The Scotsman – Monday, 30th January 1893, page 5

Celtic v Leith Athletic – The opening League match between these teams was played at Bank Park before a pretty large gathering of spectators. The Athletic played their strongest available eleven, but the Celtic lacked the services of Doyle, their back, who failed to turn up at the field of play. Dunbar partnered Reynolds, and Clifford stepped into the vacant position at left half-back. Throughout the game was most stubbornly contested, and, taking into account the strong wind which was blowing, the display of football was highly satisfactory. The Celtic won in the end by a goal to nil, but on the days play there was not a goal between the teams, and a draw would perhaps have better represented the run of the game. With the assistance of the winds, the visitors had the best of the first half, but it was less than ten minutes from the interval before McMahon scored what ultimately proved to be the only goal of the match. The defence of the home team in this portion was faultless, and when oft change of ends the wind became much stronger, the Athletic’s hopes of pulling the match off were very bright indeed. Luck, however, was in favour of the Parkhead eleven, and although throughout the greater part of this half, the game was fought out in front of Cullen, the Leith team could not get on level terms with their renowned opponents. Reynolds, Cullen, Maley, and Kelly by their grand play were in the main accountable for the victory secured by the Glasgow team.

Celtic – Cullen; Reynolds and Dunbar; Maley, Kelly, and Clifford; Davidson, Blessington, Madden, McMahon and Campbell.
