[…]St Bernard’s v Celtic – The meeting of these teams in the third round of the Scottish Cup proper did not occasion exceptional interest, for it was generally felt that in facing a combination such as the Celtic, more especially at Parkhead, the eastern team were set a task beyond their powers. All that was hoped for was that the St Bernard’s would, at any rate, do something to corroborate and confirm the excellent form which they had displayed all season. The weather was not too favourable, and at no part of the game would the attendance exceed four thousand, As for the game itself, it was a most disappointing one from a St Bernard’s point of view, for the Celtic simply did as they liked with their opponents, and had the satisfaction of retiring victorious by the large score of eight goals to one. Great as was the victory of the Irishmen, it was no better than their magnificent display deserved, Finer combination was never seen anywhere, the whole team working as one man. The opposition was week, more especially in the back division, which proved no match for the dash of the Celts. Briefly, the run of the game was as follows. Playing with the wind against them, the Celts, by the aid of McMahon, were the first to find their way to the net. Playing with great dash, the Saints, through the instrumentality of little Brady, equalised. McMahon was in evidence again, and from his foot came the Celts’ second goal, Lindsay saving badly. Before half-time was reached, Cassidy had contrived to increase the home total to three. With the wind against them in the second half, the St Bernard’s outlook was far from promising. This was made evident when Divers, the latest Parkhead recruit, headed the ball into the net for the fourth time. Just after, Macmahon increased the already formidable lead of his side to five. The right wing had their innings, and goal number six was sent through by Madden. The same player was responsible for the seventh, and ere the whistle blew Macmahon rattled through the eighth. It will thus be seen the discomfiture of the Edinburgh team was complete. Macmahon was the bright particular star in an almost perfect eleven. Baird was the most prominent player on the defeated side.

Celtic – Cullen; Reynolds and Doyle; Maley Kelly, and Curran; Blessington, Madden, Cassidy, McMahon and Divers.
