Glasgow Herald, 9th April, 1914

After Kilmarnock’s opening run had been checked, McMenemy’s clever evasive tactics enabled the Celts to attack and force a couple of corners.

The first try however came from Neil, his effort being stopped at the bottom of the upright. It was early evident that the respective defences were to play a prominent part in the game, for although both forward lines played well in the outfield their tactics were always spoiled by the earnest and well-timed efforts of these divisions.

Cunningham was a frequent trier, but Shaw was always on the spot, while a shot from Watson was headed out by Dodds right from under the bar. Half an hour had gone when Overs led an attack on Blair’s goal, and passing out to McMenemy the Celtic inside left sent across to Gallagher. The custodian made to get at the cross shot, but Gallagher’s head met the ball and it passed into the net. Play was even up to the interval. Celtic, 1, Kilmarnock, 0.

The early stages of the second half were marred by too frequent displays of temper, and cautions had to be administered. There was nothing between the teams, Kilmarnock’s playing pluckily and cleverly against their stronger opponents. Whittle, too was very unlucky on more than one occasion, the ball passing narrowly when Shaw was helpless, while once McNair’s judgement prevented the equaliser.

On the run of the play the game was value for a division of the points.

The Scotsman, Thursday 9th April, 1914

Celtic strengthened their League position last night at Kilmarnock, where they luckily gathered a couple of points. On play Kilmarnock were worthy of a point, as at no time could one side claim any distinct advantage. It was a lucky goal, too, which Gallagher headed through in the first half, and it came immediately after Shaw’s charge had run a few narrow escapes.

In the second portion there was not a little temper shown.

All through, the defences mastered the forwards. Celtic were represented by their full cup tie team. The attendance numbered 6,000.
