DEFENCES AGAIN PREVAIL
The features of the October game at Parkhead were reproduced in the return fixture. The resuly was identical, because once more the Rangers’ defence managed to hold out against, probably the cleverest attack in the League, and of course there was never much chance for the home side five unless Shaw, McNair and Dodds failed to maintain that understanding which has assisted Celtic through many triumphs and records. They did not fail. The triumvirate were often in difficulties, not once in danger of yielding a goal, and McNair was by far the most effective defender on either side. Trusting to more haphazard methods the Ibrox backs were equally successful, but also fortunate to find several shots beat them and strike goalpost or crossbar. In the second half in particular Hempsey was singularly lucky in this respect. Riddell and McStay dominated the opposing inside forwards to such an extent as to veto all attempts at combination, and the centre halves had much to do with the effectiveness of forwards more clever than courageous.
