Trivia

  • Celtic & World War One
  • The top two teams, Celtic and Morton win by a single goal scored from the penalty spot which seems to annoy the Glasgow Herald sports writer in their Monday edition. LINK
  • Page 6 of the Herald reports the New Year escapades of two Lanark men, Thomas Duffy and Scott Clarkson, both farm servants who stole £30 from a chest in the Lochkart Mill farmhouse where they worked. The men went on a lavish spending spree and when apprehended there was only 1s 7d left. The Sheriff at Hamilton orderd Duffy to pay a 15s fine or 10 days in prison and Clarkson was ordered to receive 12 strokes with a birch rod.
  • Page 9 of the Herald reports that the Kaiser has issued an order for the war to continue as the Allies have rejected his peace offer.

Review

It is surprising that Joe Dodds had the strength to score from the spot considering this is his ( and Alex McNair's) fifth game in eight days.
The full back partnership featured on 30 Dec v Falkirk, 1 Jan v Rangers, 2 Jan v Clyde, 3 Jan for Home Scots v Anglo Scots and then in this game.

LEADERS SCRAMBLE HOME
As already mentioned, the leading trio, Celtic, Morton and Rangers, won by the same margin, as much through opposition incapacity as from anything accompanied by the winners. It would have been ever so much better for the competition if all three had featured on the losing side, as so nearly happened. The margin between them and the 17 that follow is now so great as to reduce the tournament to the level of a race that is no race, where betting extends to second and third places only. However if the League race is now confined to three clubs it is left to the others to decide their order, and it will be no surprise if Heart of Mid Lothian and Clyde take the opportunity of improving Morton’s prospects by defeating Celtic at Tynecastle and Rangers at Shawfield next Saturday. If only one club can win the championship, the others can at least make it interesting and there is every reason to expect Heart of Mid Lothian and Clyde adding their contributions.
