Trivia

  • Celtic & World War One
  • The Glasgow Herald of Monday 15 January gives a defender, the centre and left wing of Hearts their military rank and gives Bob Mercer the title of Bass (poss Mess?) Drummer, which seems to be a miss-print as the previous week's report on Hearts has him a 'Gunner'. The brief match report in the newspaper says that McColl scored with two minutes to go. LINK
  • Page 3 of the same paper carries an article dealing with the use of methylated spirit as a substitute for whisky while another article deals with the pawning of whisky.
  • The Herald also carries articles on mounting concerns on the part of President Wilson, which would soon lead to the USA joining the war.

The Glasgow Herald, Monday 15 January 1917.
The leading clubs – Celtic, Morton, and Rangers – again figured on the winning side, and if the Greenock team won by a score out of proportion to their merits the other two were doubly fortunate to win at all. The Celtic forwards did not appear capable of improving upon past goalmouth endeavours nor of ending a long sequence of reverses at Tynecastle, and many left under the impression that the Edinburgh teams had gained a point, thoroughly deserved, when the unexpected happened. Two minutes from the close McColl ran through to score the only goal of the match and give his team their first victory at Tynecastle in half a dozen seasons. Mercer was, as usual, an outstanding figure in the home defence, and this was the only slip by him and Kiernan.
