Trivia

  • Celtic & World War One
  • After this game, in which Gallacher starred, Celtic have 58 points and Rangers in second place have 49 points. Both teams have 4 games remaining, and, with 2 points for a win, the Bhoys can't be caught.
  • The home crowd at Boghead were heartened when the Sons took an early lead in 6 minutes through Archie Ritchie, but Celtic drew level 7 minutes later, then before the break took the lead and went on to win fairly comfortably, finishing with a late Dodds goal 10 minutes from time, which ensured that the champions for this season are the current holders of that title.
  • The Glasgow Herald (see report below) is less than enthusiastic about Celtic's title-winning game.
  • Page 4 of the same newspaper carries the text of a telegram from the King to US President Woodrow Wilson thanking him for his declaration of war against Germany. LINK
  • Page 6 of the Herald reports the first US trooper killed in WWI after 7 Germans tried to blow up the Brinton Arch Tunnel at Pittsburgh. These acts of sabotage in the US prior to and during the war were aimed at discouraging US entry, then hindering the war effort.

CELTIC AGAIN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
The success of visiting clubs has been such a marked feature of Scottish League football this season that it is not surprising to find Falkirk the only home and winning team on Saturday. Heart of Mid-Lothian held their own with Kilmarnock and Ayr United came well out of their meeting with Queen’s Park, but Clyde, Rangers, Dumbarton, St Mirren and Hamilton Academicals were defeated on their own grounds.

Rangers’ second consecutive failure and Celtic’s victory at Dumbarton made certain what has always been apparent; the Championship has once more been secured by the Parkhead club.

The League must now regret having vainly approached the S.F.A. for permission to play one or two unnecessary week-night matches, and it is probable that their request for an Inter-League fixture will meet with a similar fate.

DUMBARTON’S PERFORMANCE
When Dumbarton scored first in the game at Boghead they were merely repeating a feat achieved in mid-season at Parkhead, and there was just the possibility of their again drawing with the champions. Unfortunately for the provincials Gallagher formed one of the opposition on Saturday, and it was this player who contributed most to the downfall of the home team, though the goals lost by Millar were secured by Browning, McColl and Dodds.

Few teams have beaten Shaw in both matches this season, none has held a lead over the champions in both engagements, and no doubt the Dumbarton players will plume themselves on a measure of success that has been denied reputedly better elevens.
