Trivia

  • The Glasgow Herald of Monday Nov 19, 1917 reports on the poor attendance (2,000) at Parkhead for a football match between the British and Belgian armies and makes only passing reference to the match at Dumbarton.
  • The Herald also records the lack of interest in the "mining class" of Midlothian who had preferred a quoits contest to an army recruitment meeting for Volunteers at Gorebridge, Midlothian, on Saturday morning, the latter having to be cancelled due to lack of interest. The meeting was to be addressed by Lord Rosebery who did not take the stage and retired to Roseberry House where he later learned of the death in action at Palestine of The Hon. Neil Primrose, his son. LINK
  • Under the headline "Palestine Advance" page 7 of the Herald summarises the major victories by allied forces including the capture of Jaffa by ANZAC cavalry under General Allenby.
  • The weeks war casualty figures published in the Herald are 157 Officers and 6,308 Men.
  • Also in the Herald, Alexander Kennedy & Sons, Castlebank Dyeworks, Glasgow, advertise their quick service for "Mournings" that is skirts, coats etc. that need dyed black to mourn the event of a sudden bereavment. Prices range from 5s (25p) for a skirt to almost 10s (50p) for a suit.
