The Glasgow Herald – Dec 31, 1917
CELTIC ALMOST CAUGHT NAPPING
Extremes met at Somerset Park, and the forwards responsible for Ayr United’s lowly position were consistent in their ineffectiveness, otherwise the leaders would not have secured both points. A lead of two goals lulled the Celtic forwards into a sense of security, an error that was nearly their undoing, for the Ayr defence showed a marked improvement after the interval, and the home forwards were given such opportunities to draw level – and spurned them – as made it more apparent than ever why United have fewer goals and points to their credit than any of the 18 League clubs .
