GLASGOW –CUP TIES
So far Scottish clubs have not had reason to sample an increased tariff with diminished exchequer; gates and games have been alike fairly satisfactory. The real touchstones will be applied when Celtic and Rangers meet on Saturday in a city cup tie at Parkhead, and if the attendance reaches the 60,000 anticipated it will be evidence that the football-loving Scot is not averse from parting with two sixpences when assured of receiving an ample return. The form of the teams concerned is a guarantee that the play will please the most fastidious, though the result may disappoint one section. Celtic and Rangers have taken part in nine League matches, and have won them all, so a first defeat for either is a sequel to their cup tie encounter, a prospect which will induce many to lay aside, for one day at least, their aversion to higher tariffs. Partick Thistle and Clyde meet in the same competition at Firhill, and if the officials of the ground club were successful in their negotiations with Middlesborough at Sheffield on Saturday they will have made more certain their opportunity of meeting Third Lanark in the next round. In view of Saturday’s encounter Celtic restored McAtee to the position he had monopolised for several seasons and Rangers gave Cairns an innings that Reid might be in better physical condition for the first crucial test of the season. Raith Rovers and St Mirren cannot be said to have benefited from the alterations, as McAtee made scoring very easy for McInally and Cairns was responsible, directly and indirectly for the four goals gained at Paisley. The dismissal of Gallagher by the referee availed the other side very little, but other teams will benefit should the sub-committee appointed by the S.F.A. to deal with such incidents decide the player ordered off was not blameless.
