Match report from The Scotsman, 10th October 1921

[…] A splendidly contested game between Dundee and Celtic was played at Dundee, and attracted fully 25,000 spectators. The Celtic started brightly, and on several occasions Fotheringham saved in difficult situations, but after half an hour’s play Dundee had a prolonged period of exciting pressure, in which Shaw, the Celtic custodian, distinguished himself. He was nearly beaten by a low shot by Halliday, which was only inches wide. The second half was mainly in Dundee’s favour, but in the last quarter of an hour the Celtic showed clever outfield play, and had a good grip of the game. Kilpatrick and Troup had great efforts foiled by Shaw alone, and the Celtic’s best scoring chance fell to Cassidy, who sent the ball wide. A draw was a fitting result of a strenuous and enjoyable game, which was remarkably free from infringements, considering the keen excitement which prevailed amongst the spectators, many of whom were from Glasgow. Dundee’s outstanding players were Fotheringham, Thomson, Nicholl, and Troup, and for the Celtic Shaw, McStay, McAtee, and Gallacher were prominent.

Celtic at Dundee

Celtic as usual were a big attraction at Dens Park, Dundee, where the local club satisfied popular opinion by reinstating Kilpatrick and McLean in their forward division. Celtic were without left-winger McLean, and again gave the position to their reserve centre forward, Longmuir. Dundee improved considerably on recent displays, and managed to divide the points with their distinguished visitors – the only drawn game in the competition. Each side missed scoring chances in a fast game, in which Shaw, the visiting goalkeeper, specially distinguished himself during the second half. Celtic are now only one point behind the leaders, but have played 11 games against Rangers’ 10.
