Articles

Glasgow Herald, 21st August, 1922.

“Celtic the Champions, had the distinction of introducing First League football to Alloa’s supporters, who showed their appreciation by turning out in record numbers.”

“The new team to the League rose to the occasion as it was only after a gruelling contest that Celtic secured the spoils by the odd goal in five.”

“There could be no mistaking the earnestness of Alloa , and the impression left by their display was that as they become more familiar with their new conditions they will do better. Over-cageyness was their chief weakness.”

Glasgow Herald match report: Alloa, the new club in the Scottish League made a creditable appearance against Celtic, scoring the first goal. Early in the game Burns got within shooting distance of Shaw, Hilley clearing. An unsuccessful attack by the visitors was followed by the return of Alloa, who scored 15 minutes from the start. Quin passed to Craig, who sent a high shot out of Shaw’s reach. Shortly afterwards Celtic were awarded a penalty kick, which McStay converted. Celtic pressed but for some time were unable to gain the lead, Thomson saved repeatedly. The visitors pressed hard on the resumption. Ultimately, following a free kick, Cassidy rushed in and scored. Only five minutes elapsed when Gallagher scored Celtic’s third goal. Alloa rallied, but were unable to break down the Celtic defence. Near the finish the home side were awarded a penalty kick, from which Wood scored.
