Six minutes after the interval Hillhouse opened the scoring. The Third then put up a bold defence, and deservedly emerged victors by the solitary goal. Estimated attendance 20,000

The Glasgow Herald – Jan 22, 1923

Celtic suffered their ninth reverse in succumbing to Third Lanark in a strenuous game on a heavy ground. The Champions were again without Gallagher, and are clearly not a formidable company in his absence. The success of Third Lanark was long overdue, was merited on the day’s play and following upon their success in the Cup-ties, the fortunes of the Cathkin club have undergone a favourable change.

Celtic were first to make progress, but McIlwraith intervened and deprived McAtee of the ball. The visitors continued to press, but with no success, and Third Lanark took up the running. McInally missed a chance to open the scoring, and Celtic got away and forced a corner which came to nothing. Third Lanark pressed in the second half, and from a flag kick Hillhouse headed through six minutes from the resumption. Celtic struggled hard, but failed to gain the equalising goal.
