A disappointing Celtic lose their first ever league game to Partick Thistle.
After this defeat, it is reported that Chairman Tom White entered the changing rooms puffing on his cigar to boom out "No bonuses!". Charming!

Match report from The Scotsman, 3rd September 1923

THISTLE'S FIRST WIN OVER THE CELTIC
Partick Thistle created a new record when they journeyed to Celtic Park, Glasgow, and defeated Celtic by the odd goal. This was the Thistle's first league triumph over the Celtic, and they quite deserved their victory. The Thistle shaped well in the opening stages, and after Ballantyne had missed an easy chance, Hair headed narrowly over, after a clever run by Salisbury. The Celtic tried hard to get on the attack, but they were easily beaten back, and a run by Blair and Kinloch resulted in Hair heading the ball into the net well out of Shaw's reach. From that time to the interval the Celtic held the upper hand, but the forwards never struck a proper game, and Thomson was seldom in danger of being beaten. Shortly after the restart the Thistle forwards again got round the Celtic defence, and Hair went ahead to score a second goal. Cassidy got the Celtic's only point with a fine drive, but shortly after missed a grand chance to equalise. The Celtic were weak in defence, the half-backs in particular failing to hold the sprightly Thistle forwards. Thistle's half-backs played a great game, and chief credit for the victory goes to them. They kept the Celtic forwards in hand throughout. The attendance would be about 12,000.
