Match report from The Scotsman, 10th October 1923

The 2000 spectators at Parkhead, Glasgow, yesterday witnessed a good game between Celtic, the Scottish Cup-holders and Bolton Wanderers, the English Cup-holders. With half a gale blowing, the play was wonderfully good, both sets of forwards showing fine control over the ball. All over, Bolton were the better balanced side, and were more often attacking than Celtic. Ten minutes from the interval McLean was brought down inside the penalty area, and from the resultant penalty awarded W. McStay opened the scoring. Just on the interval, clever play by Vizard and Joe Smith led to the equaliser, the inside right giving Shaw no chance with a fast, low drive. The Englishmen were the superior side in the second half, but the Celtic defence was very safe, and Shaw was never in danger of being beaten again. On the Bolton side, Seddon, Jennings, and Finney were outstanding in defence, and Butler, Joe Smith and Vizard in attack.
