Trivia

  • William "Stewart" Chalmers, the only forward in the home side worthy of note, opened the scoring for Hearts after 28 minutes before Willie Hughes equalised for Celtic on 44 minutes. The Heart of Midlothian goalscorer was capped for Scotland while still an amateur with Queen's Park. Celtic are still without the services of Peter Wilson.
  • The Selection Committee of the Scottish Football Association met in Glasgow yesterday, and, after a meeting lasting almost two hours, they chose the following team to represent Scotland against England at Hampden Park on Saturday March 28:— J. Thomson (Celtic); J. Crapnell (Airdrie) and J. Nibloe (Kilmarnock ); C. McNab (Dundee), D, Meiklejohn (Rangers) (captain), and J. Miller (St Mirren), A. Archibald (Rangers), G. Stevenson (Motherwell ), J. McGrory (Celtic), R. McPhail (Rangers), and A. L. Morton (Rangers.).
  • Rangers top the table on 49 points, Motherwell are second on 49 points and Celtic third on 45 points having played two games less than the others.
  • The Parks Committee of Glasgow Corporation yesterday approved of a programme whereby 335 band performances will be given in the city parks during the summer months. Last year the number of performances was 558, and the explanation of the reduction this season is that the maximum sum allowed was exceeded. There will be 40 performances in Kelvingrove Park, 34 in Bellahouston, 23 each in Alexandra and Tollcross, 25 each in Glasgow Green, Queen's Park, and Rouken Glen; 22 each in Springburn and Victoria, and 20 each in Elder and Ruchhill. About 30 local bands will perform at the open-air concerts.

CELTIC DROP A POINT AT TYNECASTLE.

A typical Heart of Midlothian-Celtic tussle was seen at Tynecastle, Edinburgh, and it resulted in a one-goal draw. And a division of the points was a very proper verdict.

The Celtic were still without Wilson at half-back, where Scarff was on duty, and Hughes was introduced at outside left in the forward line, with Napier supporting him. Scarff was a very capable half, and Hughes did a lot of good work, notably in the first half, when he had the good fortune to secure the equalising goal against the run of the play a few minutes before the cross over.

Quarter of an hour before that, the Hearts had gone ahead by Chalmers, who drove the ball home with a first-time effort after a Celtic defender had headed out. The Celtic goal had several escapes about that time, when the Hearts were clearly the better side, and were very aggressive, and had Massie taken his chances then they would have been well in the lead. Once in particular he failed badly when he had but the goalkeeper to beat from close range. He did not get his foot properly to the ball, and Thomson saved cosily. He was playing in White's usual position, White was unable to turn out, and Murray was also an absentee. For the latter Jaap played, and while he did good work at times, Murray's greater speed and snap would probably have greatly benefited the side.
