HEARTS' FIRST HOME DEFEAT
Partick Thistle's eleventh League win in succession and the Heart of Midlothian's first home defeat of the season were witnessed by fully 20,000 spectators at Tynecastle, Edinburgh. The Thistle were the smarter and more dependable side. The Hearts' team were only good in parts, and though the players fought sturdily after losing an unlucky goal the better finish came from the visitors, who scored the winning goal two minutes from the close. The absence of Anderson, down with influenza and out of the team for the first time this season, deprived the Hearts of their customary confidence in defence. McLeod and Ness scored for Partick and Smith for the Hearts. Motherwell had to fight hard for their victory at Kilmarnock but in the end their superior finishing power carried them through. Their scorers were Ogilvie, Moffat and McFadyen. McEwan scored for Kilmarnock. The "shock-providing" Hamilton Academicals themselves received a shock from the lowly Dundee. The home team received their first home defeat of the season, and, in addition, their "score-in-every-match " centre, Crawley, failed to find the net. Boyd had three goals tor Clyde against Airdrie, Lyle three for Morton against East Stirlingshire, and Paul also had a "hat-trick" for Queen's Park. Five of Falkirk's six goals against Cowdenbeath were scored in the second half. Beattie had the goal for Aberdeen that defeated Celtic. St Johnstone were, unlucky to lose a point to Third Lanark. The vital goal was scored when the Perth goalkeeper was off the field injured.
The victory took the Champions into second place–one point behind Rangers–as Celtic lost to Aberdeen. Moore returned at centre forward for Aberdeen after an absence through injury for three weeks–in which Aberdeen lost three games–and he was a conspicuous personality in Aberdeen's 1-0 victory in a vigorous game with Celtic at Pittodrie. Third now on the table, Celtic are six points behind their Ibrox rivals.
