Trivia

  • On a sad day for Celtic with the news of the death of Peter Scarff, the loss at Dundee is of little consequence by comparison.

  • Seven goals were scored in the second half of the Motherwell-Ayr United match. Motherwell had five of them, so they surmounted the Ayr obstacle easily enough. Rangers also had a comfortable time, beating Queen's Park by four goals, but Celtic fell at Dundee.
  • In the English League, the feature was the 3-0 defeat inflicted on Arsenal, the leaders, by Sunderland, who scored through Patsy Gallacher and Bob Gurney, (2). Spurs won 3-2 against Birmingham and are now within one point of Arsenal at the top.
  • Spain experienced a week-end of grave disorders as the result of an attempted revolt of Syndicalists and Anarchists, whose object appears to be the establishment of a dictatorship of the proletariat. Many people were killed and wounded in fighting in towns and villages. "Reds" placed a contact bomb on a bridge in the province of Valencia, which resulted in the wrecking of the Seville express, with heavy loss of life.
  • Consequent on the declaration by the Irish Free State Government of the Young Ireland Association (Blue Shirts) as an unlawful Association, a commandant of the Association was arrested while he was wearing a blue shirt and taken from the country to prison in Dublin. CELTIC BEATEN AGAIN

Dundee, at Dens Park, defeated Celtic 3-2, and were well worth the bigger lead which they held until three minutes from the end, at which point Crum reduced the deficit to one goal. A crowd of between 12,000 and 14,000 people enjoyed an afternoon of good football.

From the home team's point of view the feature of the game was the remarkable success of team changes, and in particular the reappearance of Guthrie at inside-right. This player scarcely put a foot wrong, and revealed a wealth of talent which had not been altogether expected before this display.

Guthrie scored the goal which gave Dundee the lead near the end of the first half, and he had also a hand in the third, scored by Lee. Kirby obtained Dundee's first goal with a spectacular hook back with a ball which was thought to be going safely over the by-line, and which took Kennaway completely by surprise.

Celts' first goal, scored by O'Donnell, who was by far and away the best of the visitors' forwards.

Marsh played a good goalkeeper's game for Dundee, and Gilmour justified his selection for the left back position again following his suspension. Symon, Kirby, Murdoch, and Guthrie were the pick of the middle and forward lines.

Kennaway had no real chance to save any of the Dundee goals, but on several occasions he was lucky when shots struck the woodwork. McGonagle played a stout game at left, back, and McDonald was a fine deputy centre half for McStay. McGrory was allowed few opportunities with McCarthy watching his movements too closely.

Dundee v Celtic Dec 1933+Scarf RIP

Peter Scarff, the former Scotland and Celtic inside forward, died at his home in Linwood on Saturday after a long illness. Scarff, who was 24 years of age, was compelled to give up football in the season 1931-32 after having joined Celtic from Maryhill Hibs in the season 1928-29. In 1931 he was a member of the Celtic team which won the Scottish Cup, and in the same year he played for Scotland against Ireland.
