  • Interruptions and clashes between supporters of political groups at a meeting in Athlone addressed by General O'Duffy, leader of the United Ireland party led to baton charges by the Civic Guard before order was restored. The trouble was caused at the meeting by youths shouting “Up de Valera” and “Up the Republic.”
