Trivia

  • A Frank O'Donnell hat-trick was enough to win the points for Celtic against St. Mirren, the team that will contest the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers at Hampden Park in ten days time.
  • Yesterday (Wednesday), three matches were played in the First Division of the Scottish League, Motherwell, Celtic, and St Johnstone being the winners.
  • Motherwell F.C. will tour South Africa and Southern Rhodesia during the summer it was announced. They will sail from Southampton on April 26 and play their first match in their 16-match programme against Port Elizabeth on May 17, and conclude the tour with a match on July 4 at Cape Town.
  • Full settlement by the defenders was intimated at Dundee Sheriff Court, yesterday, in an action by Wm. McIntosh & Son, wine and spirit merchants, 30 Gellatly Street, Dundee against the Dundee Football Club (Ltd), for £70, 1s. 3d. in respect of a liquor bill. Mr. John Ross, for the pursuers, intimated that the defenders had paid the principal sum and expenses. “I have got as much as I can possibly get”, Mr Ross told Sheriff Malcolm.
  • Conditions in the German Evangelical Church are becoming more critical from week to week, and even greater trouble seems to be anticipated. Scarcely a day passes but statements reach the writer from protagonists on both sides of the conflict. On the one side is Hitler’s favourite Reichs-bishop Muller, and on the other the expelled, but highly-respected, Pastor Niemöller, who opposes the Nazification of the German Protestant churches. In many of the Church districts the pastors may not publish anything without submitting it first to some Church authority; in Hamburg they must place their manuscripts, if designed for publication, before the State secret police.

ST. MIRREN SOUNDLY BEATEN

F. O’Donnell, Celtic's centre-forward, scored the three goals by which the Parkhead team beat St Mirren in a home League game last evening.

With a strong wind in their favour, St Mirren pressed during the opening minutes. Knox and Latimer were prominent, but when the ball came into the middle McDonald invariably proved too much for McGregor. St.Mirren were in luck's way when the upright stopped a fierce drive from Divers, and a moment later McCloy saved from the same player.

Celtic now had most of the play, and it was no more than their due when F. O'Donnell caught up a pass from Divers to open the scoring in 24 minutes. Six minutes before the interval the home team went further ahead after Divers had made a fine run. He passed to F. O'Donnell and the centre-forward's shot was stopped by McCloy, but the ball returned to O'Donnell while he lay on the ground and he sent it into the net.

In the first minute of the second half Murphy, the Celtic outside left, was injured and retired to the line. He returned in a couple of minutes, but was latterly taken off, limping badly.

Knox and Latimer kept changing places, but Kennaway continued to act the part of spectator and Murphy returned.

After 20 minutes Urquhart, the St. Mirren left half, had to retire with a cut head, and Murphy again retired, each side finishing with ten players.

After 36 minutes of the second half F. O’Donnell completed the scoring by heading through from Crum's well-placed corner-kick.
