Trivia

  • Celtic routed Ayr and revenged their defeat of last season at the hands of the Honest Men. All the Celtic players played well, but only stalwart international goalkeeper Bob Hepburn (who recently had a testimonial v Manchester City), and left-half Holland of Ayr impressed the pressmen.
  • Referee J. Thomson of Burnbank started the Celtic v Ayr game ten-minutes early, but even so the last quarter of an hour was played in near darkness.
  • Celtics victory over Ayr United, was the biggest win of the day in the Scottish League. Seven goals they scored, and five players shared in them. This was the Celts' fourth win in succession, and they have moved to 7th place in the League table.
  • In England Arsenal regain top position after beating Everton in front of 52,000 at Highbury while Stoke City were losing to Sunderland at home. Manchester City experimented by playing the Scots Alec Herd and Jimmy McLuckie on the right wing and it worked as both scored in a 3-1 home win over Spurs.
  • Two reserve officers of the Royal Air Force were killed on Saturday when flying to a wedding with confetti which they intended to scatter from the air upon the bridal couple. The airmen, officers of the County of Nottingham Bomber Squadron, R.A.F.—had left Tollerton aerodrome, where they hired the machine only ten minutes, when they crashed on Chilwell Manor golf course. The accident was seen by the wedding guests, and some of them immediately set off to the spot in cars. Among the charred debris was found a packet of confetti and two woman's shoes.
  • A 30 miles per hour speed limit will be in operation from January after the Minister of Transport, Mr Hoare-Belisha, sent a letter to all local authorities.

CELTIC MASTERS AT PARKHEAD

SEVEN GOALS AGAINST AYR UNITED

The Celtic took a complete revenge on Ayr United at Parkhead, Glasgow, when they overcame their visitors by seven goals to nothing and so atoned for a three-goal defeat suffered last season on their own ground.

The United, whose team did not differ greatly from last season, were a feeble lot, and only on fleeting occasions did they compare with their opponents. The Celts fully deserved their victory, and the margin did not flatter them in the least.

Ayr United introduced Fitzgerald (Queen's Park) at inside-left, but he did not have a very happy debut. The home club half-backs dominated the game, and that, together with the bright display of the forwards, put some interest into an otherwise, dull match.

Fearing that the game might have been difficult to finish, owing to the bad light, Referee Thompson started it ten minutes before the advertised time, and it was a wise move, as the concluding fifteen minutes were played in almost semi-darkness.

The Celts assumed the aggressive from the kick-off and took the lead in eight, minutes, when F. O'Donnell headed the ball through from a Delaney cross. The home club men increased their pressure, and H. O'Donnell and Delaney scored further goals to give the Celts a comfortable three goal lead at the interval.

The second half was a repetition of the first, with the visitors possibly more overrun than in the earlier portion. Taylor and Holland showed snatches of combined play with the men in front, but it was not sustained. Fisher in the centre tried hard but did not manage to shake off McDonald.

The Celts indeed did pretty much as they liked, and F. O'Donnell scored again after Delaney had shot against the crossbar. Before the end, further goals came from Buchan, Paterson (penalty), and Delaney.

In a disappointing Ayr United side only Hepburn and Holland stood out in good work. The Celtic had every reason to be pleased with their team's display, and particularly with the play of Paterson, Buchan, and Napier. Napier, in particular, showed good form.

The attendance would be about 5000.
