ANOTHER WIN FOR CELTIC

Celtic defeated Queen of the South by three goals to one at Dumfries before 12,000 spectators, which was just under the record for the ground.

Burns, a new recruit to Queen of the South, was early prominent when he shot past, after Kennaway had allowed the ball to slip from his grasp under pressure by English. The Queen of the South forwards very rarely managed to combine effectively, and most of their cleverness was of the individual type.

It was somewhat against the run of play, however that Geatons scored the opening goal for the Celtic after half an hour. Fergusson conceded a free kick for handling, and Geatons scored direct from about 25 yards range. Thrilling football followed, and the home side met with success when English secured the equaliser just before the interval.

On the resumption the home defenders were kept constantly in trouble owing to the cleverness of Delaney and Buchan on the Celtic right wing. Twice Delaney was only robbed of success by great tackles by Allan and Savage. Twenty minutes had gone when Delaney's perseverance at last had effect. He beat Culbert in a tackle, and ran in to shoot the ball into the net.

Queen's made a spirited reply, and on several occasions came within an ace of scoring. Burns had a great ground shot stopped by Kennaway, and later the goalkeeper saved a shot from English after the centre had an earlier effort, which rebounded from the cross-bar.

Until near the end, it looked as if Queen of the South might easily force a draw, but in the closing minutes McGrory slipped past the watchful Allan, who played a great game for Queen of the South at centre half, and made victory more, certain with a good goal.

The Celtic were the better balanced team although the home side were not behind them so far as defensive work was concerned.

The Dumfries attack will have to be strengthened before the side can be a force in the competition.
