Trivia

  • Celtic falter again at Perth with Wylie the home goalkeeper saving a Willie Lyon penalty kick. Celtic now lie in twelfth place in the league after three games played.
  • A crowd of 10,000 saw Joe Connolly the Scottish Lightweight Champion from Bathgate knock-out Gustav Humery of France at Shawfield Park. Jake Kilrain of Bellshill, the British Welter-weight champion drew with Paul Schaeffer of Canada on the same bill.
  • A novel catch was made by Mr A. A. C. Schultz, of the Iranian Legation in London, while fishing at Skeabost, Skye, yesterday afternoon. His cast hooked a grouse in its downward curve, and on a friend hastily producing a landing net the grouse was landed in the same fashion as a salmon.

ROUSING GAME AT PERTH

WYLIE SAVES A PENALTY KICK

St Johnstone confirmed their good showing at Parkhead on the opening day of the season by defeating Celtic at Muirton Park, Perth, last night, by two goals to one, in one of the most exciting games seen at Perth for years. It was a well-merited success, and the visitors were rather a disappointing side in attack and defence, their hall-backs alone playing to championship form.

It was a stirring game in which neither side spared themselves. St Johnstone had this pull throughout the first half, and in this second, with Beattie injured their defence stood up to a gruelling time in splendid fashion, while a depleted attack scored one and gave the visitors many anxious moments.

Beattie and Tennant almost bored through in the opening minutes, when Celtic did not impress. Buchan was the dangerous forward, but he kept possession too long to be effective, while Moulds's steadiness kept Crum well in subjection.

St Johnstone's forwards were well on this mark, and Kennaway did well to save a high shot from McCall. A desperate kick for a corner by Lyon showed the strain on the visitors' defence, and in twenty-two minutes the home team scored through a penalty for an infringement against McCall, who himself took the kick.

Kennaway showed his ability in stopping a well-placed header by Ferguson, and the Celts survived another penalty appeal. It was near the interval before Wylie was really troubled, and it was Crum who positioned himself to get in two quick tries.

Beattie lost a glorious chance by miskicking in the goalmouth, and a moment later the centre-forward was carried off following a collision. He returned after the interval on the wing, with McCall in the middle.

Play lost none of its keenness but although the Celts were trying doubly hard to pierce a sound Perth defence, it was McCall who had the best try with a flashing shot across the goal. Still, Celtic were fighting in a fashion; difficult to deny, but they got a shock in eleven minutes. McCall was downed when running in and the ball rolled out to the injured Beattie, who slipped it into the net.

The reverse brought an element of flurry into the Celtic play and rush methods were adopted, but the Saints' defence was not to be upset.
Wylie, while kept on the alert, was never seriously tested. Fouls were frequent, another six minutes from the end Buchan got the Saints' defence undecided for once and scored a good goal.

It was a desperate finish and the climax came three minutes from the end when Clark brought Delaney down in the penalty box, but, to the accompaniment of deafening roars, Wylie saved Lyon's kick.

Apart from Geatons, Lyon, and Paterson, only Kennaway was outstanding for Celtic. St Johnstone carried no weakling. McCall, Tennant, Ferguson, and Moulds were particularly prominent.
