Trivia

  • Celtic go two up with goals by Willie Buchan in 18 and Jimmy Delaney in 31 minutes before Patrick Farrell pulled a goal back for Hibs, just before half-time. The game was evenly contested in the second half until Hibs conceded a penalty in the 63rd minute and George Paterson converted. Johnny Crum with a quick one-two in 86 and 88 minutes completed a good win for the bhoys.
  • Scotland’s football programme was played in blizzard conditions with strong wind and driving rain. The surprise result of the day was Queen of the South’s draw with Rangers, the first points dropped at Ibrox this season. Celtic move to second place two points behind Aberdeen.
  • In England David McCulloch scores a hat-trick for Brentford as the London club beat Liverpool 5-2, but Preston North End’s all-Scottish attack for once fail to score in a goalless draw with Charlton at Deepdale.
  • Madrid is virtually besieged now as General Franco’s troops have surrounded the Spanish capital and have cut all road and rail links to the city.
  • The week-long strike of Glasgow dockers continues following a meeting of 2-3,000 men at the St Andrew’s Hall.

HIBS OUT OF LUCK

CELTIC MAKE THE MOST OF EASY CHANCES

The result of the game at Parkhead did less than justice to the Hibernians' performance. After all, not every team can present the Celtic with two goals and be only one behind at the interval. It was pure bad luck that Gourlay lost the first goal. A drive by Buchan had been safely gathered, but as he relaxed his grip preparatory to punting clear the greasy ball slipped from his grasp into the net.

Gourlay was again a victim of circumstances when the second goal was scored, as the men in front of him, apart from raising their voices and their hands in an appeal for off-side, did nothing to stop Delaney running in to score. In contrast with these somewhat unsatisfactory successes, the goal obtained by the Hibs a minute before the interval was very well worked out. From Egan the ball went to A. Anderson, who slipped Hogg and centred for Farrell to head past Kennaway.

The same freedom of movement was revealed by the Hibernians in the early stages of the second half and they were shaping promisingly until the fates again took a hand against them. Delaney, racing in on goal with Dunsmore alongside him, fell, and a penalty which was debated, was awarded, and Paterson scored. Not surprisingly, the Hibs rather faded out after that incident and in a confident finish by Celtic Crum scored twice.

After an Indifferent start the Hibernians improved considerably. Apart from his early lapse, Gourlay kept goal excellently, and in front of him Miller, Prior, and Dunsmore were a good defensive trio. Egan. A. Anderson, Farrell , and Black did the lion's share in attack. Only at the beginning and near the finish did Celtic move with smoothness. McGrory was carefully watched by Miller, and Buchan and Delaney were the danger-points. Lyon was a reliable centre half-back.

Played in a downpour of rain, the attendance was 4,000.
