Trivia

  • A Jimmy McGrory brace is enough to put the bhoys in the draw for the next round, and the score could have been much worse, but for miraculous saves from Stenhousemuir's keeper John Hill.
  • The draw was made for the Second Round of the Scottish Cup with no Rangers in the hat, the Ibrox side having been knocked out in the First Round by Queen of the South.
  • In England Scottish players featured in a number of games including Ex-Celt Willie Fagan who scored the goal that enabled Preston to draw with Manchester United.
  • In Adelaide, England’s cricketers are struggling in the fourth Test after Don Bradman had made his second successive double century in what some see as his best innings ever.
  • Colonel Norman McLeod advised the Glasgow Magistrates that financial support for the Military Cadet Forces could reduce the number of gangsters on the streets. The Colonel said the Corporation’s opposition to militarism had caused a decline in the number of cadets at Glasgow High School.
  • In the House of Commons, Mr Davidson (Soc, Maryhill) asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he contemplated taking any action to regulate or abolish the sale of the red wine, commonly called "Red Biddy," in Scotland. Mr Gallacher (Com, West Fife)—asked is the Right hon. gentleman not aware that "Red Biddy" and methylated spirit are used together, and are creating absolute physical and moral havoc among the people of Glasgow?

CELTIC'S RETURN TO FORM

Celtic beat Stenhousemuir at Parkhead yesterday in their replayed tie by two goals to nil.

The champions showed an all-round improvement on last Saturday's display, although there was a slight weakness on the left side of the attack. McGrory's display was particularly heartening, as, in addition to scoring both his side's goals, he was very eager, and led his line well.

The ex-Hibs' goalkeeper, Hill, had a great match, his saving it times bordering on the miraculous. The other star in the visiting side was Brown, a stalwart defender, who played a strong game, although visibly tiring towards the close.

The Second Leaguers were by no means outclassed, and caused considerable concern before McGrory scored in 29 minutes, the centre smashing a corner kick by Murphy past Hill.

Murray led an attack on Kennaway's charge, and almost equalised with a smart header.

Seventeen minutes after the restart Patterson sent a free kick into the goalmouth, and McGrory headed it into the net.

Hill, Brown, Clark, and Murray were best for Stenhousemuir, and Hogg, Lyon, and McGrory were Celtic's best.

The attendance was 8,000, and the receipts £504 (exclusive of stands and tax.)
