Trivia

  • Celtic play well up until Jimmy McGrory is injured and has to take up a wing berth. Third Lanark then dominate and could have won by a bigger margin than the four goals they scored. Jimmy Yardley, Robert Kennedy, and Alec Kinnaird scored and starred for Thirds while Johnny Crum and Willie Buchan were best for Celtic.
  • Tom Doyle makes his debut in goals for this match and did well with one spectacular save that turned him head over heels.
  • Relegation candidates Dunfermline Athletic, buoyed by their surprise 0-4 victory at Firhill last week have named the same team to play Celtic at East End Park this Saturday.
  • Willie Gallagher, Communist Party M.P. for West Fife was refused a passport to allow him to travel to travel to Spain as a Special Correspondent for the Daily Worker.
  • Orient Line Cruises are advertising a 17-day cruise on the Orontes taking in Lisbon, Algiers, Casablanca and the Atlantic Islands from 27 Guineas.
  • 100 girls employed by Barr & Stroud Ltd. downed tools and marched in unison to a mass meeting being held in Govan by the striking Clyde apprentices where they were met with “great enthusiasm”.

CELTIC WELL BEATEN

McGRORY SUBDUED

THIRD LANARK, 4; CELTIC, 2

Celtic, the Scottish Cup finalists, were decisively, defeated in a remarkable League encounter at Cathkin Park last night.

Although Celtic were without four of their regular players —Kennaway, Geatons, Delaney, and Murphy being absent—this did not account for their inability, to match the speed and skill of the young Third Lanark team. In the second-half particularly, Cathkin forwards repeatedly baffled the Parkhead defenders, who at times were sorely distressed in preventing Yardley and his colleagues from securing the complete upper hand.

Indeed, only desperate goal-line clearances by Hogg and Lyon prevented Third Lanark from registering one of their biggest victories of the season.

The understanding which existed between the home half-backs and forwards gave Third Lanark a confidence and a balance never equalled by Celtic.

RECRUIT'S FINE DISPLAY

Ritchie, Third Lanark's recruit, had no equal afield, while Kinnaird and Kennedy also excelled and Denmark subdued McGrory to such an extent that Celtic changed the attack, Crum going into centre with McGrory on the left-wing. This change led to improvement, but even at their best, the Celts did not look capable of mastering a spirited Third Lanark team.

In the twenty-ninth minute Lyon was deceived by the bounce of the ball as it came in from Kinnaird and Yardley, ran round him and scored the first goal from 12 yards. Ten minutes before the interval, however, Buchan equalised in a sustained Celtic attack. Third Lanark were in command in the second half, and were, most unfortunate not to-regain their lead in the early minutes after Lyon had headed-out-from under the bar, Doyle executed a masterly save from Yardley, turning a cartwheel in doing so.

The goal however came from a corner kick by Hart; which found the Parkhead defenders undecided, and before they could recover, Kennedy, netted.

A-quarter of an hour before the end, Yardley got another goal and a minute later Kinnaird ran through after receiving from Kennedy and scored with a powerful shot from over 20-yards.

Later Third Lanark were awarded a penalty kick but Carabine struck the crossbar, and the ball rebounded into play. With-five minutes to go Buchan reduced the deficit, but by that time Celtic were a well beaten team.
