Trivia

  • Trouble at this game.
  • September 17 1941 – SFA close Celtic Park for a month until October 18 after crowd disorder at Ibrox. Celtic not allowed to play at any other ground in Glasgow until that date. Somewhat draconian, and Celtic feel injustice. Fans suspect that it may because Celtic supporters wave flags of neutral Ireland. SFA and their Secretary George Graham perceived as being irredeemably anti-Celtic.

Review

3-0 against but most newspapers thought Celtic the better team.

First goal was offside, then Celtic awarded a penalty after Delaney was “grounded”.

Murphy took the kick, it was parried by Dawson, but when Murphy ran in for the rebound, he was fouled by Woodburn. No foul given and a hail of bottles from the Celtic end saw police going in with truncheons.

Things calmed a little in second half, but Delaney and Crum were both injured (and stretchered off) by serious foul play and no action taken.

This game did little to dispel the belief that referees were against Celtic.
