- Some players were part of a strike by players before a League Cup semi-final v Rangers on 2 May 1942. They ended up gathering in St Enoch’s Square only to be told there would be no complementaries for their guests and they must pay like the rest at the turnstiles. It was also about bonus money for being in the semi-finals. Reluctant to get changed before the match, the players acquiesced once cigar chomping Chairman White came down.
- The Southern League Cup was a regional Scottish football competition held during the Second World War, due to the suspension of national competitions. Held between 1940 and 1946, the competition involved all teams from the Southern League and was played as four groups of four with the group winners forming the semi-finals. In the final season, due to additional teams, the competition doubled in size with quarter-finals for the eight group winners.
- Wednesday May 6 1942 – bizarre events when virtually the whole Celtic team that had played on Saturday were picked to play Rangers Reserves in the 2nd XI Cup, and lost 0-2! What was this all about? Was it even legal! Was it a punishment for Saturday? Celtic now the laughing stock of Glasgow.
Review
Classic case of Celtic self-destruction with the confrontation before the game doing no-one any favours. Crass ineptitude of both management and players meant that the heart was not in it.
“Sticking out like Mussolini’s jowl” was the fact that the Celtic forwards were simply not up to it.
