Trivia

  • A thumping victory for once. Tully was fit with McAlindon dropping out and the line all moving in one with McPhail restored to centre forward.
  • The headline for the article on the game was, "Celtic Fly the Eire Flag." "Parkhead Hits Victory Trail in a Big Way."
  • Some reports credit Tully with the third goal on 31 minutes but the papers originally showed the goal going to Weir. However after half time it was found that Tully's cross had crossed the line for a goal before McPhail and Weir were involved.

Review

Celtic began like they realised what there was to play for. Jock Weir opened the scoring on 15 minutes. A Tully cross was headed in by McPhail and Henderson grasped only to be charged by Weir and the ball was dropped and poked home. McPhail headed the second from a Tully cross. Celtic did not rest on two up however, and Collins soon got a third. Tully was again the provider, cutting inside before passing to Weir who slipped the ball to Collins to shoot home. Brown then beat Bonnar from 18 yards with a surprise goal. Celtic retook their three goal lead when Tully crossed and McPhail headed goalwards for Weir to steal in and score on 31 minutes. Queens appealed and the referee had words with Neilson. Evans retired on 37 minutes with an ankle injury but resumed in the second half going to outside left playing opposite Waldie who was also crocked. Celtic continued to command as the heavens opened and the rest of the match was played in the rain. Peacock scored a dramatic fifth from fully 35 yards out with a powerful shot and Weir added the sixth. Weir had a chance to gain a hatrick 10 minutes from time but shot past the post.
