1953-02-11: Celtic 3-0 Stirling Albion, Scottish Cup Replay

Match Pictures | Matches: 1952 1953

Trivia

  • Replay at Celtic Park after the 1-1 draw at Annfield four days before. Fallon was out with a recurrence of the broken arm. Peacock came back in and fernie dropped back to half back. Stirling Albion were unchanged. The draw for the next round had already been made and it saw Celtic again drawn away to Falkirk.
  • The ground had a light covering of snow over a hard surface – a tricky surface for play.

Review

McGrory kicked off and it was immediately apparent that the ground was very tricky. Speed and balance together were impossible. Bonnar was called on to make a good save from a corner early on. Stirling were looking on top by keeping the ball moving and not trying to be fancy. Albion were hitting on the break with long balls. McGrory had a good shot, the best of the half, four minutes from time, but at half time it was still 0-0.

Evans started to move in the second half which led to McGrory’s first goal. He passed to Tully, who crossd and McGrory headed home. Albion missed the chance of the game on 60 minutes. Peacock got the second crafted by Tully with a back heel flick to Collins who crossed and Peacock volleyed home decisively. The killer third came from a log clearance out of defence by Peacock. With most of the Albion players caught out. Jenkins ran out of his goal but Mcgrory got to it first and deftly lobbed the keeper. Celtic’s outstanding players were Evans, Stein and Fernie with creditable mentions for Tully, McPhail and McGrory.
