Trivia

  • An unchanged team from the previous draw against East Fife though Jock Stein was playing with a broken nose.

Review

Celtic needed the win to have any chance of further progression in the competition and set off in the right frame with Mochan and Fernie having a number of good attempts on goal. Then on 11 minutes Stein brought down Baird in the penalty area and McCulloch scored from the spot. Celtic were then unlucky from a McPhail free kick. Fernie had a header rebound off the bar into the keeper's hands. In the second half Celtic pushed to equalise but again the goals would not come. Four minutes into the second half Celtic were awarded a penalty when Peacock was brought down in the area. Jimmy Walsh stepped up and sent the spot kick over the crossbar. Airdrie defended stoutly and playing on the break whenever they could. On one of these McCulloch fired in a shot which flew past Bonnar to put the Celts two goals down. Jimmy Walsh got a consolation goal for Celtic just before the end.

Effectively the result ended Celtic's hopes of further participation in the latter rounds of the League Cup for yet another year.
