Trivia

  • With John Bonnar injured during the replayed Glasgow Cup game, his deputy George Hunter came in; a largely reconstructed forward line to try to get something out of the competition and to address the lack of goals saw Bobby Collins drop out, Walsh go to outside right partnered inside by Fernie, Neil Mochan moved out to outside left and Frank Whyte coming in as centre forward. Apart from Hunter this was the same team that had played in the Glasgow Cup replay against Queen's Park. Tully was out injured.
  • Also this week it was announced that Joe Baillie and Bobby Collins would not be called up for National Service – Joe because of his succession of cartilage and knee injuries and Bobby Collins because of his broken arm injury.
  • The Celtic reserves – the 'A' side – also played this weekend against Hibernian 'A'. The team was Bell, Meechan, Jack, Hipsley, McIlroy, Baillie, Murphy, Rowan, Duncan, Conroy, McMillan.

Review

Aberdeen kicked off and attacked and Hunter had to be alert to twice keep out first Hamilton and then Yorston. Mochan made a good run and crossed for Whyte who failed to read the ball. Aberdeen went ahead on 12 minutes from a Yorston shot. Celtic got back at Aberdeen immediately and Morrison had to be sharp to turn a Fernie shot around the post. Buckley then scored but the goal was ruled offside. Celtic equalised on 27 minutes when Walsh picked the ball up and ran at the Aberdeen defense before releasing a shot from 25 yards that beat the keeper. The Dons attack was being held up well by Celtic with Stein marshalling the defense, however two minutes from half time Yorston got his second to put Aberdeen in front at half time.
Celtic's play in the second half was disjointed with passes going astray and moves breaking down too easily. Aberdeen's third goal came when Dunbar beat Rollo and crossed for Buckley to head home. They went even further ahead on 73 minutes with a goal from Hather and on 86 minutes a fifth goal from Buckley. In the last minute Neil Mochan pulled a goal back for Celtic.
In the end it was another poor performance from the forwards who just did not seem to be able to play as a unit.
