Trivia

  • With the team out of the League Cup this was a chance to give some of those from the Reserve side a run out in the senior team; Bonnar came back having recovered from his nose knock and stitches; Meechan replaced Rollo; Collins came back in; the experiment with Mochan at outside left lasted one game and he returned to centre forward with Tommy McMillan coming in for a senior debut at outside left.

Review

Said to have been an entertaining martch in which the forwards on both sides gave good accounts of themselves but their play was thwarted by superb centre halfs – Stein for Celtic and Finlay for East Fife. Both keepers had little to do in the early part of the game with Bonnar making the first save of note after 15 minutes. Both Peacock and Fernie underperformed as inside forwards. McMillan performed well and sent in some good crosses which were by and large missed. Yet again the forward line failed to click. East Fife scored on 28 minutes when a Luke shot struck Stein and was deflected into the net past a stranded Bonnar. Curran denied what looked like it was a certain goal for Peacock at the start of the second half. Celtic dominated the start of the second half but again failed to put the ball away despite good efforts from Peacock, Collins and Mochan. In the closing minutes McMillan hit the post and Curran saved from Mochan from close range.
McPhail and Evans had good games with consistent passing which was thoroughly wasted by the forwards none of whom received pass marks apart from debutant McMillan. Jock Stein was excellent in defense.
