Trivia

  • Rollo took over from Fallon at left back. It was clear Fallon was still short of the fitness and match awareness he had had before the lay off with his arm injury. He had also picjked up some kind of knock in the floodlit game at Wolverhampton Wanderers ground; Jock Stein was also out with his deputy McIlroy coming in; up front, Jimmy Duncan and John Higgins replaced Mochan and Fernie who were both out injured. This was Higgins first full senior game thiough he had played in the Glasgow Charirty Cup in May 1952.

Review

An evenly matched game by all accounts with the result in doubt right to the end. Patterson's winning goal was deserved, Oakes bringing the ball the length of the field before crossing for Patterson to head home. The first half was relatively quiet but Celtic upped the pace in the second and score the opening goal from the penalty spot. Queen of the South equalised through a header which was as much Hunter's faulty as he went for the ball far too late. Evans and Peacock had good games and were the main source of passing to the forwards.
