Trivia

  • Fallon and Stein were restored to their respective places with Rollo and McIlroy dropping out.
  • The game programmecontained a message from the Board of Drectors of the club as a direct appeal to the support following the rulings of the Referees Committee, the Glasgow Magistrates and a letter from the Town Clerk of Glasgow. This was following the disturbances at the Ibrox game and was a direct appeal to the support to follow the line and support the good name of Celtic (see below).

Review

Hearts attacked right from the off and it was 10 minutes before Celtic had an attack of note with Fernie produced a rasping shot from 18 yards. The first half was keenly fought but on 21 minutes Celtic opened the scoring when the ball came loose to Fernie after Evans had been tackled bringing it out of defense. Fernie centred and McPhail finished the move. The goal boosted Celtic's all round performance and they dominated the rest of the half and on 29 minutes they went two up when a Collins centre fell to Walsh. When Walsh scored he did so spectacularly and this one was no different, despatched to the top corner. Hearts tried to change their play but at half time Celtic were still two goals up.
Conn had a good chance in at the restart but his header came off of Wardhaugh. The quality of the play deteriorated in the second half with Hearts trying to gain an advantage by constantly swapping positions and the Celtic defense had to be alert to the changes. Mostly however their play was inert. There was a clash between Laing and Fallon with the Celtic player having to go off. When he came back on, his arm – which he had broken three times – was again heavily strapped and it looked ominous for the left back.

Fallon in fact dislocated his shoulder during this game.
