Celtic fielded an unchanged team for the game; Aberdeen had been hoping Joe O’Neil’s ankle injury would recover enough for him to start but it was former schoolboy internationalist and half back Jim Clunie who came into the forward line.

Aberdeen had four first-time finalists and Celtic had six – Bonnar, Meechan, Stein, Higgins, Fernie, and Mochan. The form was with Celtic with 16 Cup wins and Aberdeen just the one.

Mitchell won the toss for Aberdeen and played with the wind in the first half and Fallon kicked off for Celtic. The early game developed a pattern with Celtic gradually emerging on top and Mochan and Tully in particular seeing plenty of the ball and making good runs.

Celtic were fast and showed their superior fitness as they had done right through the latter part of the season, but despite Celtic pressure the score stood at 0-0 at half time.

After 5 minutes Mochan embarked on one of his runs and hit one of his classic shots from a tight angle directly at goal. It cannoned off of Young and past Martin in the Aberdeen goal. Immediately afterwards Aberdeen were level when Hamilton slipped the ball through to Buckley and he beat an advancing Bonnar to slip the ball in at the far post.

The game became a hard grind from both teams but on 64 minutes Fernie picked the ball up and having made his way to the line cut it back for Fallon to tap home past Martin. Aberdeen fought back hard but Evans and Stein and even Mochan back helping out withstood their advances and it was Jock Stein that went up the stairs to accept the oldest Cup in football.
