Trivia

  • Semi Final played at Firhill. Partick Thistle had only progressed against Queen's Park on the toss of a coin after two replays and extra time failed to produce a result. In the other semi final Rangers played Clyde at Ibrox on the night after this.
  • Thistle were playing their 10th game in 24 days. The pitch was greasy and playing conditions were not the best.
  • The replay would be on 9th September.

Review

A gritty game which Celtic refused to give up in.
The referee disallowed a Celtic goal two minutes from time which would ghave been a winner. Fernie dribbled the ball in along the Thistle line, the ball spun into the air and he won the header to put the ball over the line. Mowat called it as a goal kick to Partick. Stein was cautioned for dissent for remonstrating with the 'knowledgeable' referee saying that the linesman should be consulted.
The first half was described as entertaining if rarely skillful. McKenzie's first goal for Thistle was a shot from the 18 yard line which hit a post and rolled all the way along the line before bouncing in off the other post. Fallon equalised two minutes later when he chased an Evans clearance and though Ledgerwood collected, he lost possession of the greasy ball on Fallon's challenge and it was a simple tap home. Davidson for Thistle was also booked in the first half for a foul on Fallon.
Smith scored in the second half after intercepting a Stein clearance and beating Haughney before firing past an advancing Bonnar. Celtic had monopolised the play in the second half but were less than skillful in their enthusiasm to win.Tully scored four minutes from the end when a Haughney free kick eluded all the Partick Thistle defenders and Tully nipped in to toe the ball up and over Ledgerwood.
Thistle got the better of the first half and generally their defense played well. Celtic's defense by contrast were generally poor with only Haughney having a decent game. The forwards lacked leadership though Fallon was better than his games previous.
