Trivia

  • Meechan was restored to left back instead of Sean Fallon who was out with a leg injury sustained in the previous game against East Fife; Collins came back in for Mochan. There was no news on an injury to Bonnar so Andrew Bell appearing in goal was a bit of a shock when the teams were announced.
  • The big talk of the week was the Friendly international against Hungary who were at the top of the world rankings. Played on the 7th December at Hampden Park the Hungarians won 4-2. No Celts were in the Scotland team but ex-Celtic Tommy Docherty played at right half. The game attendance was 113,000 and the BBC showed the game completely in Scotland as a tele-recording, that is after the game had finished.
  • Elsewhere ex-Celtic Dugald Livingstone resigned from his position as manager of the belgian national side (having just guided them through the World Cup in Switzerland) to become coach of Newcastle Utd.

Review

Celtic used the ball well throughout the game. Evans and Stein had great games and Walsh, Fernie and Collins all played well. Fernie and Tully were the brains behind the movement initiating most of the forward moves. The Hibs forward line never got going and their passing was poor. The first goal came from a Higgins pass to Walsh. Bell was untroubled by a shot till ten minutes before half time. The first half was all Celtic and they came out for the second looking for gaols. The second goal arrived courtesy of Bobby Collins passing to Fernie. The third and fourth soon followed – fernie got his second following up on a goalkeeping werror and Walsh got his second after good work from Collins and Fernie. Higgins got the fifth when he lobbed the goalkeeper after chasing a Stein clearance.
