Trivia

  • Fernie was fit again and played and Walsh was also back in the team, with John Reid and Neil Mochan dropping out from the last team played in the home defeat from Hibernian in the League, two days before.
  • The game was played at Hampden. Both teams came into the game off the back of losses. Celtic's loss to Hibernian saw their home League record go, and Airdrie's loss to Ayr Utd. saw them lose their unbeaten record in Division B this season.

Review

McPhail's game beyond a shadow of doubt, in only his third game of the season. His play was intelligent and either showed him using the ball well or making space for others by taking defenders with him. His first goal was an opportunist's chance when the Airdrie defense and goalkeeper all misread whose ball it was and McPhail seized the chance. His second goal came from a shot from a Tully corner. Airdrie only had one shot worthy of note throughout the whole game. The Celtic half back line controlled the play throughout the game.
